Things changed with the online recreation of the original KNX-FM at knxfm93.com. The volunteer-led tribute to the original KNX-FM (now KCBS-FM, 93.1) will now be two separate entities.
First, the online address has changed for the feed. As part of the changes, a new location has been created at www.TheMellowSound.net and a new Facebook page has been created at Facebook.com/TheMellowSound.Net. Also, it should alleviate any confusion with the new KNX-FM news simulcast that I recently talked about.
There will also be some other changes. The station will identify more clearly as a tribute to the original KNX-FM and no longer function exactly as an on-air entity – no identification at the top of the hour, for example (although I really liked that!) . But the things that made the original so special are still here or will come back as soon as everything is transferred to the new server: The Odyssey File, interviews, concerts, jingles, promotional artist IDs… and of course, the music.

Founding partner Patrick Veling tells me he hopes to take the “resort” to an even higher level through the addition of resort subscriptions, swag, etc. “We are creating a robust interactive listening environment,” he explained, promising “a stronger bond with fans of the original Mellow Sound.”
Veling says he doesn’t want to ask for donations, even though they would still be appreciated and accepted. He hopes the station’s running expenses, from server costs to artist royalties and more, can be funded through the sale of subscriptions and merchandise – T-shirts, hats, stickers and more. TheMellowSound.net is already available online and maybe it will be on the various apps and smart speakers by the time you read this.
Veling remains with The Mellow Sound, as well as other founders and volunteers including Brad Goldman, Douglas Brown, Steve Marshall, Christopher Ames, Mary Price, and Kevin Speaks, all of whom were or were fans of the original KNX-FM.
Another founder, Dale Berg, split from the group and brought back a format all his own, 97 Lite FM, which is the feed you will be redirected to if you access the knxfm93.com website or log in using the various smartphone apps.
Lite-FM, says Berg, plays music that stretches to the present day – website www.97litefmusa.com describes his playlist as stretching from the 1970s to 2000 – creating what he considers to be what would be KNX-FM as it might exist today.
Changes at WION
WION / Ionia – my favorite AM station in the world – is undergoing technical changes that may interrupt online listening.
Station manager Jim Carlyle told me that the company they used to manage music royalties for online listening had gone bankrupt, forcing WION (and other streams across the country) to find alternatives. . In the case of WION, this also meant changes in the way online feeds were hosted. The bottom line: there may be times when WION won’t be available, but they will return soon, always showing the incredible fidelity of AM stereo.
Radio Suerte helps others
Fountain Valley Radio Suerte low power station (KLIE 90.3 FM; radiosuerte.net) showcased the power of local radio through a Christmas food and toy drive.
Station manager Maria Luisa Luna said the idea for the ride came after seeing so many friends, family and community lose their battle with COVID-19. The station, along with the nonprofit Crusade of the Penny, decided to organize a toy drive “and focus on distributing cans of canned goods and dry goods to less fortunate families and giving them gifts. masks to remind them that the virus or pandemic is still present. with us, ”she explained.
“We asked for toys during our programs and had a good response not only with toys but also monetary donations to apply to families and children,” Luna told me. “We have distributed 300 toys, 400 bags and boxes of food to families and 500 face masks” mainly to families in Garden Grove and Santa Ana, she said.
“Our goal for the month of February is to return to La Palma Park and feed the homeless. In the past, we’ve also cooked full meals for the Fullerton Armory… 400 red or green chili burritos, salad and for dessert: Arroz con Leche – like Mexican rice pudding, ”Luna said. “We help anyone in need and have been doing so since 1987.”
