A TC West ink radio station
GRAYLING – Blarney Stone Broadcasting will broadcast Traverse City West football, boys ‘basketball and select girls’ basketball games in partnership with the station’s affiliates, Q100 on FM-106.3 WWMN.
The Grayling-based station has been broadcasting the sports of Grayling Viking High School for many years. The games will also be podcast and posted on q100-fm.com.
Tom Devitt will handle play-by-play tasks with Rich Caulkins as color analyst.
The Titans’ football season begins August 26 with Midland at 3:30 p.m. at Michigan Stadium as part of the “Battle in the Big House”.
Testing TCSF Hosts
LANSING – Traverse City St. Francis High School will host a tryout for the Lansing Pharaohs of The Basketball League (TBL) on Saturday, August 21 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in its gymnasium at 123 E. Eleventh St.
Registration costs $ 100 in advance and $ 125 at the door. Places are limited to the first 30 registrations. Charges can be sent via CashApp to $ Lansingp or via PayPal to info@lansingpharaohs.com.
The season of saints ends
MANISTEE – The Manistee Saints season ended with an 8-1 loss to the Lombard, Illinois Orioles on Saturday night in the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series quarterfinal at Battle Creek.
Manistee ends his season at 25-8, setting a franchise record with a 0.758 winning percentage.
The Saints won pool games against the North Jersey (NY) Sox and Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Buckeyes while losing an additional game to the Addison Braves (Illinois). Kyle Gorski took the victory over the mound over the Sox and Roddy MacNeil took the victory over the Buckeyes. Alex Schmitt suffered the loss to the Braves.
In the elimination game against the Orioles, Sam Schmitt started well despite the loss. The Saints lost 3-1 in the ninth inning before the Orioles scored five runs against the Saints’ paddock.
Frankfort native Brett Zimmerman and Traverse City Central graduate Sam Schmitt were named Saints Co-Players of the Year. MacNeil repeated as the Saints Pitcher of the Year.
Allen joins the Hall of Fame
MIDLAND – Native of Honor Stephen Allen will be inducted into the Michigan American Softball Hall of Fame in the Meritorious Service category. Allen is a longtime umpire in the Traverse City area, working matches since 1989. He participated in his first state tournament in his seventh year and has umpired 20 since then. Allen has umpired in six US National Softball Championships.
The ceremony for the 2021 class will take place at the H Hotel in Midland on October 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available August 23 through September 10, unless they sell out earlier.
Wolves host a playoff game
TRAVERSE CITY – The Northern Michigan Wolves semi-pro football team (10-0) welcomes Albion at 5 p.m. on Saturday at East Middle School, 1776 3 Mile Road N., for a playoff game.
Tickets cost $ 8 for adults and $ 5 for children. All ticket sales go to the grade eight East Middle School football program. Wolf merchandise will be available for sale.
Cory Gunther Memorial
KALEVA – Northern Michigan Dragway had 206 entries for Saturday’s Cory Gunther Memorial event. $ 1,600 was raised for the Benzie County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit.

The race continues with Thirlby Street Nights Friday at 5 p.m. and a TNT Specialty Transport Season Championship event (13 of 18) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Derby hat competition
WILLIAMSBURG – The Go Blue / Go Green Arena Polo Match & Barrel Racing Charity Charity Event has added a Kentucky Derby style hat contest.
Participants are invited to decorate a hat in their favorite school colors to be judged in front of the VIP tent between the 1st and 2nd polo chuckers (approximately 1:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.) on August 21 at Flintfields Horse Park. Prizes will be awarded to the winner or finalist.
The event opens at 11 a.m. and includes a polo match between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, as well as the Rebellion Barrel Race Series Finals.
The event raises scholarships for students at UM, MSU and Northwestern Michigan College in the Grand Traverse area.
