MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy was canceled on Tuesday, its editor Alexei Venediktov said, dealing a blow to one of the few liberal outlets so far tolerated by the Kremlin.

The move came shortly after the Attorney General’s office requested that access be limited to Ekho Moskvy and the online news channel TV Rain due to their coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. .

The request was prompted by the “targeted and systematic publication (…) of information calling for extremist activities, violence and deliberately false information on the actions of Russian forces in the framework of a special operation” in Ukraine, the prosecutor’s office said.

Russia rejects the term invasion, says its actions are not aimed at occupying territory but at destroying Ukraine’s military capabilities and capturing what it sees as dangerous nationalists – a pretext Ukraine rejects and the West as baseless propaganda.

Venediktov, one of Russia’s best-known journalists, wrote on his social media channel Telegram: “Ekho Moskvy has been taken off the air.”

On his website, which was shut down for a short time but was later accessible again, Ekho Moskvy said the charges against him were baseless and offensive, and that he would fight them in court.
