As reported in the latest American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC) newsletter, a legionary from North Carolina has been named the recipient of an American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Amateur Scouting Service Award for its work of opening up to the world. from amateur radio to boy scouts.
Chris Cancilla (call sign W4CEC) is an Air Force veteran and 10-year PUFL member of American Legion Station 187 Walter E. Cole in Wake Forest, North Carolina, as well as the chairman of Boy Scouting job. He is also president of the amateur radio club of the post office, WF4TAL. And in the community, he is the founder and president of the Occoneechee Amateur Radio Society (OARS) club, chairman of scouting for the Franklin County Amateur Radio Club, and serves as a commissioner at the BSA Occoneechee Council. He received his section leader’s award from ARRL at a meeting of the Franklin County Amateur Radio Club.
Over the past year, Cancilla has hosted Merit Badge events, held licensing courses and test sessions, participated in Get on the Air and Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) events, and much more. It also keeps abreast of connections with the K2BSA Amateur Radio Association (“considered the amateur radio station of the BSA National Council, according to its website”), TALARC operating out of the American Legion’s national headquarters in Indianapolis and from the Department of North Carolina.
