Listeners are ‘disgusted’ after popular classic hits radio station was rebranded as ‘new home of sport’

Fans have been devastated after a popular Queensland radio station announced it was going to ‘rebrand’.

According to a report by The Mail Mail On Thursday, the new owners of 4KQ announced that the radio station would become Queensland’s “new home of sport”.

The radio station – whose slogan is “Good Times & Great Classic Hits” – was recently acquired by Sports Entertainment Network.

“We have been listening to the 4KQ breakfast show since moving to Brisbane over 20 years ago. I can’t imagine starting my day with anything else,” a fan wrote on the radio station’s Facebook page.

They added, “We will be disconnecting from 4KQ. Very upsetting.

“It’s just not true that such an old music station is going away,” another fan commented.

A listener added: “I am always in disbelief at the change. The station is part of our lives. I have been a listener [for] almost 30 years”.

Many listeners argued that there was enough sport and insisted that the beloved radio station remain exactly as it is.

“So sick of sports, there’s a lot of it on TV, it doesn’t have to be everything.” Love your station and just awful iconic music will be lost,” one fan wrote.

‘I can’t believe it was sold to broadcast sports!!! Absolutely disgusting to destroy this great station,” added another.

Meanwhile, a listener said he was ‘stunned by the news’ and added: ‘Sport hey…good luck with that…I’m out.’

According to Sports Entertainment Network, the changes are set to take place in July, with a “sports-focused format”.

The new radio station will provide 24/7 sports coverage and has been dubbed “Queensland’s only dedicated sports station”.

“Our economic model is sport, and parish sport is at its heart. The people of Queensland love their state and its teams and we are delighted to play our part in amplifying that passion,” said SEN chief executive Craig Hutchison.
