There’s no more True Crime than that. What is being called the first statewide prison radio station in US history launched this week. “Inside Wire: Colorado Jail Radiowill be broadcast to Colorado prisoners on CCTV and to the public on the Inside Wire app.
Inside Wire CEO and PD Ryan Conarro says KUSA-TV there is a wealth of stories and perspectives behind the walls. “Radio is the perfect medium for this environment. We truly believe that listening and sharing are essential human acts, inside and outside prison.
The station broadcasts music, news and entertainment. It is a collaboration between the Colorado Department of Corrections and the University of Denver’s Prison Arts Initiative. Hosts come from prisoners at Limon Correctional Facility, Sterling Correctional Facility, and Denver Correctional Facility for Women.
The morning show, which starts at 5 a.m., is called Inner thread in the morning. At 9 a.m. Domestic hotlines is an audio message board that includes announcements and updates for prisoners. There is also a 9 p.m. show called behind the micwhich profiles the prisoners and staff in Colorado who broadcast Inside Wire.
Conarro tells The Colorado Sun“Many of the people I work with inside prisons are here because they have done wrong and they are separated from society because of it and they are working on healing and redemption. If we continue to have what has traditionally been there, which is a space of great isolation and a sense of lack of connection, that redemption and healing is much less likely to happen. …I think storytelling, listening to each other and sharing these stories is fundamental.
