Cowes Live Radio – which carried live coverage of the Cowes Week regatta – will transmit on Cowes Week but not on FM, after the last breath givers arrived too late to get a licence.
Last week, the station appealed for help after admitting it did not have enough funding, risking not being able to carry a show for the first time in more than 30 years unless it receives donations.
Over the weekend funds were secured from companies including Cowes Week Ltd, Activate Switch, Red Funnel and Lallows – but not in time for them to secure an FM license from regulator Ofcom.
The station, which has been in operation for 36 years, broadcasts to more than 100,000 competitors and fans from Cowes Live Coast on the shores of the Solent but has struggled to keep its head above water in recent years, after the path it was funded changed.
Steve Ancsell, founder of the station, said:
“Frankly we have struggled since Cowes Week lost main sponsor Skandia, the latest commercial entity to fully support radio,
“Since those days, we have had to negotiate commercial funding through sponsorship and advertising as an independent operation.”
Commentary and coverage will be delivered as an online streaming service via websites, on the Cowes Week app, smart speakers as well as the Cowes Week YouTube channel.
